1. Helen Levitt
2. August 31, 1913
3. Levitt began her photography career at the age of 18. Her first show was called "Photographs of Children" which featured a subject matter of underpriviledged children. She began concentrating a lot on film and directing, but about ten years later she came back to photography and has been continuing with that ever since.
4. Helen Levitt's photographs are mostly black and white pictures. She is very focused on old neighboorhoods and one of her most popular subject matters is that of children. Her pictures capture the simple life of these children and the everyday activities they do to keep them busy. She is known for her original point of view and documentary style photos. Her photos show us the real truth behind urban New York and give us a look into what urban life is really like.
5. While looking through the Masters of Photography website, I had many different photographers to choose from. Helen Levitt stuck out to me because of the children in her photos. The carelessness of the children and the simplicity of her work really stood out to me. I love her work and really forced me to put myself into the setting of the photo and live in that moment for a few seconds.
